Culture the Kid and Pleasing take part in this year’s EXCITE exchange programme

Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg is a committed partner in the EXCITE network, which brings together eight music export organisations from across Europe (BE, DE, DK, LU, NO, NL, SE, UK) to support the international careers of artists. One of EXCITE’s main activities is to give acts from the member countries more international live experience. This is done in various ways, including through the support of partner festivals that offer EXCITE artists performance opportunities.

In Luxembourg, this year’s partner festival was Koll an Aktioun, which took place in Haut-Martelange in mid-May.  This way, the initiative offers selected Luxembourg artists valuable opportunities to perform on renowned stages. Culture the Kid, one of the current participants in the EXCITE programme, performed at the Millerntor Gallery Festival earlier this year and Pleasing will perform at the SWN Festival in Cardiff, Wales, in October. In recent years, acts such as Tuys, Edsun, Klein, Bartleby Delicate, MAZ, C’est Karma, CHAiLD, Ptolemea and DasRadial have also appeared on the stages of international partner festivals such as MS Dockville (Germany), Sørveiv Festival (Norway), SPOT Festival (Denmark) or Sonic City (Belgium).

Culture the Kid
When asked why he makes music, Culture the Kid, a Luxembourgish rapper and vocalist of Brasilian descent will reply that “it’s about leaving a trace”. There are few limits to the sounds the Kid will use to paint out every thought and emotion that encompasses his existence. His train of thought, which he proclaims to be “an express line” is the main force behind his constant explorations of fear and ego, a leitmotif throughout his compositions. Starting out as a protegé of old-school rappers in Luxembourg, he is slowly gravitating toward more experimental and progressive spheres of rap without forgetting what made the genre great. Culture the Kid prides himself on his penmanship and will not shy away from a grandiose metaphor and complex formulas to bring his point across. Fluent in 6 languages, he chose English, Portuguese and French to be the ones to transcribe his mind. His unbridled energy during his live performances is sure to leave none indifferent as he oscillates between flamboyant ego trips and deep introspection. Culture the Kid has been spotted on various lineups among many great names such as OG Keemo, Ninho, Luidji and NeS and been the opening act for artists equally as renowned such as Selah Sue or MC Cabelinho. Culture the Kid prepares to delve deeper into his Brasilian heritage in future projects and diversify his target audience as well as develop further collaborations with Nu Jazz Band Jambal.

Pleasing

In 2018, a leap into the unknown left Luxembourg-based artist Patrick Miranda wanting something more. Together with Xavier Hofmann and Sacha Ewen, Pleasing was founded. Within the mists of depression, Patrick channelled a cutting gust of air, clearing the way for his expression of self. However, his newfound perspective did not only mean more possibilities for his profession in the music industry. Confused about not feeling fulfilled despite living life according to his wishes, he faced the largest question of life: Death. For a while, he found himself dancing with the Reaper while balancing on a rope over the valley of where it all ends. Nonetheless, something stirred his will to create art in a situation as absurd as his. A deep-seated desire for non-existence suddenly started to fuse with shrieking guitars, disembodied screams, and blasting drums. Here, the magic of Pleasing’s approach comes into being; the expression of meaninglessness has meaning to it. There is importance in nothingness because it drives the artist to create truly authentic work. This is Pleasing’s journey to feel a soothing breeze by heading through turbulent times. With already deeply emotional, raw, and poetic performances, Pleasing now has a strong follow-up to their 2021 album “in the mood for super dark times” with their newest rendition of beautiful postrock and visceral post-hardcore; the 2023 EP “for us to escape.”
