European Design Festival to be held in Luxembourg in June

From 31 May to 4 June, Luxembourg City will host the 2023 edition of the European Design Festival. On this occasion, the non-profit organisation Design Luxembourg, which organises the event, is organizing five days of wide-ranging events in which creative people from all over Europe and the general public are invited to participate.

What’s on the agenda? Conferences, studio visits, workshops, a designers’ market and exhibitions, as well as two parties not to be missed. Local talent and Luxembourg creations will be honoured on 1 June, during the Luxembourg Design Awards, which will reward all design disciplines. On 3 June, the famous European Design Awards ceremony will be held, honouring the best practices in communications design.

As part of these promotional activities, Design Luxembourg and Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg are inviting international professionals to take part in a two-day event dedicated to exchanges between professionals and meetings between designers and artists.

Among the highlights of the programme are the conferences that will be held by influential personalities in the world of design such as Alice Rawsthorn, design critic and author from Great Britain, Thierry Brunfaut, director of Base design from Belgium, Julia Kahl, founder of Slanted Publishers in Germany, Verònica Fuerte, director of Hey in Spain, Pauline van Dongen, Solar designer from the Netherlands and Mellie La Roque, president of Designers Éthiques in France.

In addition to these conferences, two round tables will be held to address current design issues. The first round table will be devoted to artificial intelligence with Marc Engenhart, designer and author, as the main speaker. He will explain the impact of artificial intelligence and its application in the world of design today. The second round table will deal with ethical issues in design.

The festival’s itinerary will be marked by exhibitions in the public space and in partner cultural institutions.
The Cercle Cité will present What the Flag ?! in Luxembourg, an exhibition of flags made by local and international artists and designers.
At the Casino Luxembourg, the Jailbird exhibition will showcase products designed by designers and made by prisoners employed by Défi-Job, a social and creative initiative. Les Rotondes will pay tribute to its railway history by hosting a life-size slice of platform, with its rails, seats, luggage trolleys, ticket dispensers and composters. The entire area will be painted in an immaculate white, known for its propensity to attract the creative energies of graffiti artists, illustrators, muralists and other urban painters. The exhibition of the winners of the Luxembourg Design Awards will also be on display at the Galerie des Rotondes.

This event is a must to discover new talents, exchange innovative ideas and reflect on the challenges of contemporary design. Discover the full programme HERE.
