Organised each year by the Sibiu Jazz Festival, the Sibiu Jazz Competition counts as a significant platform for young jazz artists.
Selected for the finals of the competition’s 2022 edition, Arthur Possing, who had presented the compositions from Natural Flow with his quartet with the following line-up, Julien Cuvelier (saxophone), Pit Dahm (drums), and Giuseppe Millaci (double bass), received the Best Instrumentalist price of the competition. Congratulations to him and the other competition’s finalists!

Eleven young musicians received the most votes from the Cello Section jury members of the George Enescu International Competition 2022 and qualified for the Semifinals. In alphabetical order, they are: Sofia Blându (Romania), Constantin Borodin (Moldova / Romania), Maria-Izabela Ghergu (Romania), Goeunsol Heo (South Korea), Jisoo Kim (South Korea), Benjamin Kruithof (Luxembourg), Jiaqi Liu (China), Constantin Siepermann (Germany), Francesco Stefanelli (San Marino), Ileana Waldenmayer (Italy) and Aihao Zheng (China).
The Online Round of the 2022 George Enescu International Competition, Cello Section, was held between May 6-23, 2022. There were 26 entries in this section, out of which, 21 contestants were declared eligible by complying with the conditions imposed by the regulations. The results were announced online by the President of the Jury in a video posted on the Competition’s website, on Wednesday, May 25th.
„I have the honor to welcome all participants to this fantastic event. The program of the qualifying round was very difficult and varied. Your performances confirmed the high level of professionalism of all the cellists. I would like to thank you for all the great music and wish you much success in the future regardless of the results of the qualifying round. Sometimes the path to success is more important than success itself because at this time we reach new heights in our art,” said David Geringas.
The cello semifinal will take place on September 5 and 6, 2022 at the Romanian Athenaeum, in Bucharest. Supporting the Competition’s mission to highlight Enescu’s creation, the cello semifinal includes, by regulation, Sonata no. 2 in C major for Cello and Piano Op. 26 of George Enescu. The final will be on Thursday, September 8, 2022, when the three qualified competitors will be accompanied by the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by maestro Tito Muñoz.
The Cello Section Jury of the 2022 edition is formed of David Geringas (Chairman of the Jury), Natasha Brofsky, Marin Cazacu, Enrico Dindo, Leonid Gorokhov, Alexandra Guțu, Reinhard Latzko, Meehae Ryo and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi.
