The documenta

Born in the double context of the reconstruction of the German post-war art scene and the construction of Europe in the middle of the Cold War. Initiated by the artist and professor Arnold Bode (1900-1977), it has contributed since its first edition in 1955 to the international interest in West German artistic creation and to the integration of the FRG (Federal Republic of Germany) into the Western political and cultural sphere. Since its creation, 14 editions have been held, some of which have had major importance in the course of art history, such as documenta 5 in 1972, curated by Harald Szeemann, or documenta IX, curated by Jan Hoet.

The 15th edition

Ruangrupa is the curator of the 15th edition of documenta. The Jakarta-based artist collective has built its documenta fifteen on the values and ideas of lumbung (the Indonesian term for a communally used rice barn). As an artistic and economic model, lumbung is based on principles such as collectivity, community building of resources and equitable distribution, and is realized in all areas of collaboration and exhibition design.
